A complex sentence is made up of an independent clause (complete sentence) and one or more dependent clauses connected to it. A compound sentence refers to a sentence made up of two independent clauses (or complete sentences) connected to one another with a coordinating conjunction. Coordinating conjunctions are easy to remember if you think of the words "FAN BOYS": For And Nor But Or Yet So The following are examples of compound sentences: Johan waited for the train, but the train was late. Mariam and Sakinah arrived at the bus station before noon, and they left on the bus before I arrived. Mariam and Sakinah left on the bus before I arrived, so I did not see them at the bus station. USE A COMMA BEFORE A COORDINATING CONJUNCTION THAT JOINS TWO INDEPENDENT CLAUSES. HOWEVER, COMMA IS NOT NECESSARY FOR SHORT CLAUSES.  If the two "sentences" (known as independent clauses) are very short, it is acceptable – for style purposes – to omit the comma. Johan joined the Army and Daud joined the Marines. Johan joined the Army, and Daud joined the Marines.

To teach writing effectively, teachers must show rather than tell. This can be done by modelling. According to Professor Linda Mason, who teaches and conducts research at Pennsylvania University, modelling is critical when teaching writing. How to teach essay writing by modelling? Teachers must be familiar with the strategies and the process involved in writing (teachers themselves must be writers too). Emphasize on teaching at the point of writing. Apply shared writing (whole class composition). Get the students involved, allow them to make suggestions--consider them and make decisions about which ones to adopt. Draft the writing orally by rehearsing sentences and improve the sentences before writing them down. Reread each section as we progress and ask the students whether the draft can be improved. Outlining your ideas is important as it helps you to: see the structure of your main points and sub-points clearly.  check the logic and completeness of what you will be writing, revealing any gaps, repetition, or illogical steps in the development of your essay.  manage your time more efficiently. Break down the outline into manageable sections, and then assign yourself reasonable time to write the first draft of each section. Remember, the introduction can be very time consuming. Leave it until the end because it is much easier to write the introduction when you have finished the first draft.
