Sample Answer (The Railway Children)

Image
Sample Question Which event in the novel you have studied is the most interesting part of the story? Give reasons to support your answer. I choose the novel The Railway Children written by Edith Nesbit. The most interesting part of the story is the saving of the train. There are many reasons why the event is the most interesting. One day, Bobbie, Peter and Phyllis see a landslide. Part of the hill falls on the railway line. The children have to warn the next train or else there will be a terrible accident. They make flags from the girls' petticoat. When the train comes, Bobbie runs forward waving the flags. The train stops just in time. First of all, this event is the most interesting part of the story because it shows that the children are clever. To save the next train, they come out with a very creative idea. They tie the girls' red petticoat to sticks to make flags, which they use to warn the train of danger ahead. Apart from that, from this event we c...

Seminar "The Secret to Writing A+ Essays" @ SMK Malim

Image
Alhamdulillah. I went to SMK Malim last year to share the 'secret' with the SPM candidates there, and I was truly delighted to know that there was improvement in the SPM 2012 results, compared to the year before. The Principal herself expressed her gratitude, which was a real honour for me. So, when Puan Fatimah--the English Panel Head--invited me again this year, I was so excited and was more than happy to go there again. I went there twice this time around; the first session was with the SPM candidates, which was on the 29th April 2013. Then, on the 8th May 2013, I went there for the second session with the PMR candidates. As usual, enthusiasm is infectious, and I sincerely believe that the students have learned a lot of useful tips, which will hopefully help them to write better essays and score better marks in exams. InsyaaAllah. The best Principal I have ever met, Dr. Hajah Rosnanaini bt Sulaiman. She is so cool. No wonder the teachers are  happy and less ...

Paragraph Structure

Image
Unity - each paragraph must deal with one topic or idea. Every sentence in the paragraph must be closely connected with the main topic of the paragraph. The topic sentence is one sentence of the paragraph that states the topic--generally the first sentence. Order - there must a logical sequence of thought or development of the subject. All ideas should be connected with the leading idea and arranged according to their importance.  Variety - avoid monotony. The paragraphs in an essay should be of different lengths, and not always of the same sentence construction.

Paragraph Writing

If you look at any essay, you will see that it is divided up into sections, the first line of each being indented slightly to the right. These sections are called Paragraphs . Essays are broken up into paragraphs to make the reading of them easier. Definition -- A paragraph is a number of sentences grouped together and relating to one topic; or, a group of related sentences that develop a single point. There is no rule as to the length of paragraphs. They maybe short or long according to the necessity of the case. A paragraph may consist of a single sentence, or of many sentences.
