Our Education System

Image
I came across the cartoon above on facebook, and it instantly grabbed my attention. I would like to relate it to our current education system. It is easy to assume that those who scored straight A s in exams (UPSR, PMR & SPM) are intelligent, while those with more C s and D s are less intelligent. Well...this is not fair.  'One must have intelligence only for what one is doing.' (Edgar Degas)   Always remember that you have qualities and skills that other people do not have and you should be proud of these and believe in yourself. Howard Gardner, a psychologist at Harvard University, came out with the theory of multiple intelligence which state that not only do human beings have many different ways to learn and process information, but that these are independent of each other. He listed seven intelligence: Linguistic intelligence - this concerns language and how we use it. Writers, poets, lawyers and speakers are among those who have high linguistic intel...

Use Adjectives and Adverbs, but Do Not Overuse Them

Image
To make a scene in your story more specific, you can use adjectives and adverbs. Study the sentences below: The toddler threw his teddy bear onto the floor. Neither adjectives nor adverbs are used in the first sentence. We do not know how the toddler feels or what type of floor is being mentioned here. The toddler threw his teddy bear angrily onto the wooden floor. The second sentence is good as it gives more specific information to the readers. The adverb angrily shows how the toddler feels when he was throwing his teddy bear, and the word wooden serves as an adjective describing the floor. Let's Get Motivated, Students.

Image
Motivation is the desire to do things. It is crucial to have motivation when setting and attaining our goals in studies as well as in life. Research shows that we can influence our own levels of motivation. Figure out what we want, power through the pain period, and start being who we want to be. Is it really that simple? First and foremost, as a student you need to be honest with yourself. Are you genuinely interested in what you do? Studying can be either interesting or boring, depending on the subjects that you have at hand. Of course, you have favourite subjects at school which you can easily score. However, there are also subjects that you dislike, but still you need to study them since those subjects are compulsory for you to take and pass-- History! In such case, lack of interest will usually lead to a lower level of motivation and most of the time you will be struggling to survive . Interest is an important motivator for a student. So is the desire to learn. When w...

Simple, Compound or Complex? The Choice Is Yours!

Professor David Crystal explains, "Sentences make words yield up their meanings."  To be able to express your ideas effectively, you need to know the variety of sentence structures and how to use them appropriately in your piece of writing. Study the examples below, and you will see how your idea can be expressed in three different ways without changing the meaning. Example 1: It was raining cats and dogs. (simple sentence 1) The boys refused to stop playing football in the field. (simple sentence 2) Example 2: It was raining cats and dogs, but the boys refused to stop playing football in the field. (compound sentence) Example 3: Even though it was raining cats and dogs, the boys refused to stop playing football in the field. (complex sentence) For more information, read Fokus SPM (February 2013, page 38-39)
